What is the GMAT?
The Graduate Management Admission Test, or GMAT, is an important part of the business school application process. The GMAT is a multiple-choice, computer-based, standardized exam that is required for admission to MBA, MIM and business-oriented MSc and PhD programs globally.
The GMAT contains four test sections: Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative and Verbal. Therein the exam uses basic quantitative and verbal subjects such as arithmetic, algebra, statistics, geometry and grammar to test your analytical, logical, evaluation and pattern recognition skills.
How should I prepare for the GMAT?
The GMAT was originally designed to be taken with a minimal amount of preparation, more of a skills-based rather than a knowledge-based exam. But as the GMAT grew in popularity it got increasingly more difficult to attain a high percentile score, to which students reacted by studying longer and harder for the exam. Which of course made it even more difficult to attain a high score. Most students nowadays set aside a significant amount of time and resources to be able to successfully tackle the GMAT.
The amount of time required to prepare for the GMAT exam is unique to each person. It holds true though (based on a 2016 GMAC survey) that those who spend more time studying tend to score higher on the GMAT. On average, successful business school candidates give themselves 3+ months and 120+ hours to prepare for the exam. Putting in the hours alone is not enough though. Assessing your personal ability level and understanding your strengths and weaknesses are also important components of preparing an effective study plan.
Although self-study remains a viable option for students who possess abundant time to prepare, most students taking the GMAT, as with any competitive exam, take advantage of every resource at their disposal in order to reach their goal. Therefore, the majority of students seeking a competitive score join a dedicated GMAT prep class or seek the help of an experienced GMAT tutor in order to maximize their potential.
